DIWALI MASALA MIX DHAMAKA 2: BHAKAD DIWAS

Diwali has plenty of interesting ways to thank the gods for their blessings. In earlier times, people would keep a photo of Lord Kuber with Goddess Laxmi and say a prayer. The worshipper bows before Lord Kuber for blessing him with money, grains and wealth. Such a prayer is considered very powerful as it fulfills all wishes.

Having a bath before pujas is a must. Your house should be well-lit all over for darkness to leave and the kingdom of light to enter. The family must come and eat the special Diwali Faral or food items together.

The origins of Diwali in the truest sense lie in ancient times. Long ago, the Aryans dwelled near the North Pole. Here, after spending six months in darkness, light would come in. This felt like new beginnings. To mark this, Deepotsav must have begun.

Another story speaks of the 7 culinary Yagnas. Of these, Parvan, Ashwayoji and Agrayayoni were merged to begin Deepavali. While Parvan is a cooking for the ancestors, Ashwayoji is for Indra & the good of agriculture and Sita and finally, Agrayayoni is Sanvagdna Samapti Raag.

The most popular association is with Lord Ram and Devi Sita who returned to Ayodhya from exile. The denizens celebrated this day with joy. Another story is associated with King Bali who became powerful, won the earth and imprisoned the gods. Lord Vishnu had to take his Vaman Avatar and defeat him. The day marking Bali’s defeat is Deepotsav.

Jainism too has a Diwali association. Lord Mahavir, their last Teerthankar, had achieved Nirvani in Ashwin Amavasya. That is why Jains do his puja and light lamps everywhere to mark the occasion of his Nirvana. That’s why Diwali is celebrated by the Jains.

Another story revolves around the coronation of Emperor Chandragupta Vikramaditya. After his coronation, Deepotsav was started and still continues.

Whatever the stories of Diwali’s origins, Diwali story teaches us about doing as much good as possible. We must also keep on fighting. One Diwali story is about the return of Emperor Ashok after winning his battle. The gist is that winning and losing. If you don’t win or lose or do anything in life, what kind of life is it? Life should have battles. Small battles bring in or add colours to life.

The next blog focuses on the third episode of Diwali Masala Mix Dhamaka – on Lakshmi Pujan / Narak Chaturdashi. Swamini Saree – Sadiyon Ki Maharani wishes everyone on this occasion. Celebrate and shop with great fervor. And visit Swamini Saree for your precious sarees. Happy Diwali!
