Swamini Saree has a special 5 episodes programme for Diwali – Diwali Masala Mix Dhamaka. Each episode throws the spotlight on the beauty & meaning of the days of Diwali, rituals and so on. Today, hear all about Vasu Baras and Dhantrayodashi.

DIWALI MASALA MIX DHAMAKA 1: VASU BARAS AND DHANTRAYODASHI

Diwali has arrived and this huge festival brings huge happiness. Every household is busy preparing the much-in-demand Faral, welcoming the guests and more. This festival of lights is also about strengthening relations apart from showing love between couples or brother-sister. And this is why you celebrate Padwa and Bhau-bheej.

Dhantrayodashi is the first of the 5 days of Diwali. Along with Vasu Baras, Govatsa Dwadashi also marks the day before Dhantrayodashi on Dwadashi. Married women do cow puja. As per Hindu beliefs, the Hindu gods reside in cow’s stomach. So, cow is considered important and gets worshipped on this day.

Vasu Baras sees our affection associated with worshipping cows. In earlier times, people would visit cowsheds. Women would carry a puja thali and a puja would take place of cows for giving us nourishing milk. Vasu Baras can be called the heralder of Diwali.

Environment preservation is deeply rooted in Hinduism. We conduct pujas of trees, light, water, etc. as a way to thank the every-giving nature. The Savatsa Dhenu Puja conducted has everyone shower affection on others.

Dhantrayodashi sees the rituals of light donation to please Yamraj. The story behind Dhantrayodashi is touching. One day, Yamraj asked his messengers of whether they feel bad while taking lives. These messengers told him the story of King Hemraj and his son. On the occasion of Shashti Puja, a सटवी came and revealed that the son would die on the fourth day after getting married.

The king tried saving him. However when his son got married at the age 16, the messengers came as per the forecast. Despite feeling bad, they had to take the boy’s life. The messengers asked Yamraj to think for mantras to keep away such premature or unnecessary deaths. Yamraj proclaimed that those who donate lamps on Dhantrayodashi can avoid death. And this is why lamp donation is a norm on this day. The importance of donation is about thanking the gods for giving everything.

Diwali has now become a festival with superficial things and showing off. We need to rethink about things that are way beyond this shallowness. Donating lamps is just one representation of removing such feelings. One can even donate organs if possible. On Dhantrayodashi, people usually purchase a new utensil and lamp.
