ENTREPRENEURIAL WISDOM FROM SWAMINI SAREES – THE MAHARANI OF SAREES

Discover Business Learning Points from the journey of Riyaz Bhai AKA Abbu

Swamini Sarees – Sadiyon Ki Maharani has a proud association with the most exclusive & exquisite sarees. It is located in Bizzyland Building, Phadtare Chowk, Kumthekar Road, Pune. This single three-storied AC posh showroom attracts saree shoppers looking for variety as per needs.

From traditional to designer & fancy, wedding, unique Paithanis & nauvaris, daily wear, and genuine Silkmark sarees, every buyer leaves happily with the saree(s) of their dream. The unique Paithanis are a star attraction. Getting a Swamini saree as a gift speaks of a close-knit relationship.

And it is the brainchild, concept, efforts and intelligence of Riyaz Bhai or Abbu. He established the brand in 2002. Having completed 20 years, Swamini Saree is a legacy of 80-year-old Abbu’s efforts. On his 80th birthday today, we look at his business pointers towards creating Brand Swamini Saree.

v  REFINING SKILLS: Abbu came from a family already in the saree business for four generations. His natural entrepreneurial spirit & knowledge got refined while working at his family saree business. It is not enough to inherit a business. Learn to take it forward.

v  LEARN TO EXPERIMENT: His experiments on saree purchases & selling met with success. He always took the chance to read the market and find ways to make the purchase. It continued when he started Swamini Sarees. Any entrepreneur must look out & be willing to take chances.

v  TIME MANAGEMENT: Valuing time is essential. Abbu would come before time to his family store and manage all the details. He also ensured his help to his associates. When you go beyond the required work, it impacts the business positively.

v  TRUST & FRIENDLINESS: Any business works on trust & owner’s good nature. And this is what Abbu did throughout his work/business – build trust & friendliness amongst the weavers, his associates and buyers. This trust makes an impact on the way your business works. Being friendliness got him respect on a professional & personal level.

v  FIRM ON AIM: Circumstances made Abbu’s father sell their family saree store. However, Abbu was keen on carrying his family’s legacy and being his own master. It made him work in the saree industry for other stores for  25-30 years. Know your goals and show a willingness to work towards them. Show the readiness to take two steps behind to leap towards your goal.

v  WORK AS PER NEED: While working in other stores, Abbu worked in every department. It honed his overall skills, from purchasing to selling sarees. The need to learn & enhance your skills at any time & age is a prized lesson. These last you for a lifetime and help grow your business.

v  LEARN PRACTICALITY: Abbu took up the charge of saree purchases and went on tours all over India for it. He developed money-saving skills and brought them as per need. It continued with Swamini. Go the extra mile. And stick to your plan.

v  SELF-RESPECT: At times, he chose to resign rather than work at places where his hard work and ethics get questioned. Self-respect & not ego must be on a higher pedestal.

v  NEVER TOO LATE: He began his journey towards his store at 51 after working with other saree stores for a while. Age is just a number. All you need is the right time and realization to begin your path towards entrepreneurship.

v  READING THE MARKET: Abbu began his saree showroom journey in the early 90s. He saw the lack of unique and exquisite Paithanis in the market. It is where his experienced knowledge came in. He guided the weavers & artisans in creating new Paithani designs and combinations. Also, he always ensured that the sarees are brought from the weavers themselves. And it reflects in the high quality of the sarees. That is why Swamini Sarees is now the leader in unique Paithanis and nauvaris, along with other varities.

v  KNOW IF THINGS WORK OUT: When he began his entrepreneurial journey, Abbu joined hands with an ex-colleague. But things did not work out. Abbu left to start Swamini Sarees in 2002. At times, things may not work. Learn to read the signs and move out in time.

v  ALWAYS BE ON YOUR TOES: 2002 saw Swamini Sarees – Sadiyon Ki Maharani become a reality on Kumthekar Road, Pune. Abbu's dream of being the master of his fate and saree store came true. Even after 20 years, it still has the reputation of being the best saree place. The store always ensures that the shopper gets the desired saree(s) and no one leaves unhappily or empty-handed. The service, showroom size and variety are thanks to their zest to provide the best. Relaxing about your success stops business growth and relevance. Be on your toes!

When you see Swamini Sarees – Sadiyon Ki Maharani on Kumthekar Road, Pune, you notice the popular showroom’s hard work, intelligence, creativity and trust. The Swamini Saree saga is a case study of entrepreneurial success and can inspire budding entrepreneurs. After all, Rome was not built in a day.

The Untold Story of Maratha Queen Tarabai: A Warrior, Mother, and Leader

Tarabai Bhosale, the wife of Chhatrapati Rajaram Bhosale and daughter-in-law of the renowned Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, reigned as queen from 1700-1708 and again from 1710-1713. Following her husband's death, Tarabai took control of the Maratha Empire and demonstrated her strength as a ruler by fiercely defending her kingdom against hostile foes. She was also the daughter of Maratha General Hambirao Mohite and Mainabai, and was born in 1675. Despite growing up amidst war and conflict, she was a brave and intelligent child. Her father was a trusted confidante of Shivaji, playing a pivotal role in the establishment of the Maratha Empire, and Tarabai learned values of courage, loyalty, and patriotism from him and his comrades. In 1689, Tarabai wed Rajaram Bhosale, but his sudden death in 1700 cut his reign short, leaving Tarabai as the sole leader of the Maratha Empire. Tarabai was not shaken by the daunting task before her, taking immediate charge of the kingdo...
