TRADITIONAL WEDDING SAREES – SOUTH INDIAN SAREES

Traditions, literature and culture are a huge part of life in the South of India. And it reflects in their attire too. From going to the office to going on a trip, many women wear sarees. While 100s of saree varieties dot each corner of the five states, three are prominent – Kanjeevaram, Mysore Silk & Poochampally.

Kanjeevaram, the Queen of South Sarees, is a heavier saree due to its weaving technique. This heirloom handloom saree is associated with the temples of Kanchi. That is why it has a touch of auspiciousness. Find authentic Kanjeevarams right here at Swamini Saree.

Poochampally comes from a village by the same name in Telangana. It is a much coveted & costly variety. Weavers weaving it are now fewer, thus making these handloom sarees a tough find in the market. One of the few stores keeping authentic & latest Poochampally silk sarees is Swamini Saree.

The kings of culturally-rich Mysore patronized silk sarees. The crepe silk saree is a prominent part of most wardrobes in Karnataka. At Swamini Saree, these sarees are a huge attraction.

If you speak about designs, Kanjeevaram leads among all the sarees. You find designs inspired by the ancient temples dotting Southern India. Like the peacock and parrot on the Paithani, a Kanjeevaram Saree has a bird called Asaav. This auspicious bird is a prominent feature of temples down South and on sarees. There is a contrasting colour in the body and border.

Light pastel shades define Mysore Silk Sarees. These are lightweight silk sarees in a single colour, delicate pallus and smaller borders. The unique treatment called stain guard helps avoid any water-related staining.

Poochampally sarees are all about the multicolour tie and dye designs. You see geometric patterns used commonly here. Bold colours get combined into patterns ranging from triangles to stripes. It is a popular choice thanks to being fusion-friendly.

Weddings are where buyers opt for sarees like Kanjeevaram, Poochampally and Mysore Silk. Brides prefer brighter coloured sarees to stand out, ranging from red and rani to maroon, wine colour and bottle green. Many also purchase these sarees for other occasions. Swamini Saree stocks an excellent collection of south sarees.

Swamini Saree is keen on safeguarding traditions when it comes to traditional sarees. However, newer sarees stocks, unique combinations and fusion sarees are always available, along with other varieties.

Our next blog will focus on the vast world of Chanderi & Maheshwari Sarees. Meanwhile, come to Swamini Saree – Sadiyon Ki Maharani for the most exclusive & exquisite sarees. Happy Shopping!

The Untold Story of Maratha Queen Tarabai: A Warrior, Mother, and Leader

Tarabai Bhosale, the wife of Chhatrapati Rajaram Bhosale and daughter-in-law of the renowned Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, reigned as queen from 1700-1708 and again from 1710-1713. Following her husband's death, Tarabai took control of the Maratha Empire and demonstrated her strength as a ruler by fiercely defending her kingdom against hostile foes. She was also the daughter of Maratha General Hambirao Mohite and Mainabai, and was born in 1675. Despite growing up amidst war and conflict, she was a brave and intelligent child. Her father was a trusted confidante of Shivaji, playing a pivotal role in the establishment of the Maratha Empire, and Tarabai learned values of courage, loyalty, and patriotism from him and his comrades. In 1689, Tarabai wed Rajaram Bhosale, but his sudden death in 1700 cut his reign short, leaving Tarabai as the sole leader of the Maratha Empire. Tarabai was not shaken by the daunting task before her, taking immediate charge of the kingdo...
