TRADITIONAL WEDDING SAREES – CHANDERI & MAHESHWARI SAREES
Traditions are a source of pride for people. And it includes clothing. What Paithani is to Maharashtra, the Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees are to Madhya Pradesh (MP).
The Maratha Empire ruled several parts of India. It includes Indore. When the Holkars came to Indore, they decided to create their own identity linked to the place. While Indore remained the capital, Maheshwar became its historically vital town. A large fort near Maheshwar belonged to the famous Ahilyabai Holkar. It is she who gave a push to the rise of the sarees. She put looms here for weavers to work on sarees. These are now Maheshwari sarees.
Like Maheshwari, the Chanderi sarees got their name from the Chanderi. Its history is slightly older and rose in value in the Mughal era. Its importance also grew with several Maratha royal & noble families using it exclusively. While Chanderi sarees get sold in the Maheshwar market, Indore is the primary market for both varieties. They collectively became known as Indori sarees.
To date, the royal and noble families in India prefer to pick the crisp & stiff exquisite Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees for their regal look. The making technique of the silk version involves lightly boiling the silk cocoon in water. It gives the sarees the required & well-known starchiness and stiffness.
Royal patronage gave these sarees national importance. These lightweight sarees in silk & cotton are known for their delicate elegance & stately appeal when worn. One can also find a combination called Garbhareshmi. Here, one thread of cotton and silk gets weaved together.
MP’s hot climate reflects in the light colours used in these sarees. The bigger Buttis are a feature too. Since Maharashtrians like sarees in dual/bright colours, they come in these colours too. Maheshwaris are all about fewer motifs and more linear designs. Chanderi leans more on motifs esp. floral ones.
Swamini Saree has hired 28 looms in Maheshwari to create the same sarees in colours preferred in Maharashtra. The Buttis become smaller. However, the authenticity of the Maheshwari sarees gets retained. Swamini has developed a Maheshwari saree called Ahilya Devi or Ahilya Mai sarees.
Coming to Swamini Saree for exquisite Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees should be a regular thing. They have a vast and varied stock. Customers can create their customized Maheshwari saree thanks to the store’s hired looms. It is a win-win situation for buyers in love with these regal sarees.
Our next blog will focus on the vast world of Bandhani or Bandhej Sarees. Meanwhile, come to Swamini Saree – Sadiyon Ki Maharani for the most exclusive & exquisite sarees. Happy Shopping!

Celebrate Gudi Padwa in Style with Unique Sarees by Swamini

Gudi Padwa, also known as Chaitra Pratipada, is a Hindu festival celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month, which falls in March or April. The name Gudi Padwa is derived from the Sanskrit words "gudi" which means "flag" and "padwa" which means "the first day of the month". It symbolises new beginnings, fresh starts, and optimism.   The festival is celebrated by people from all walks of life with great enthusiasm and vigour. People begin cleaning and decorating their homes with colourful rangolis and flowers a week before the festival. As a mark of respect toward Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, they wear new clothes, wake up early, and pray in order to achieve prosperity and peace for the coming year.   During the festival, the Gudi is hoisted, which is a bright-coloured silk cloth attached to a long bamboo stick, adorned with neem leaves, flowers, and a garland of sugar crystals.
